Architects are trained in design, engineering, and project management and have passed a licensing exam. This list includes both licensed architects and residential designers who can both design stunning homes but differ in other services offered. Our team researched and selected the best based on their credentials, their versatility in project types, their work history, their principals, their awards, and the attention they’ve received from the press. This article presents 15 of the top architects and designers in the city that contribute greatly to its continuous architectural evolution. From 2010 to 2018, I lead a design-build team in delivering over $10 million in construction services, thus I also bring a wealth of builder/contractor experience into my process as an architect. ![]() I am a Certified Virginia Master Naturalist, which entails voluntary community service and educating the general public around conservation and stewardship of Virginia's natural resources I am also currently in training as a Richmond Tree Stewards volunteer. ![]() My background includes sustainable development, affordable housing, master planning, landscape design, building science, permaculture design, solar energy systems & net-zero-energy building (NZEB) design and alternative/natural building methods. I have served private clients, non-profit organizations, municipalities, the federal government, as well as international interests in Haiti, West Africa and Central America. My experience covers a broad range of project types, including single family & multifamily residential, mixed-use, cultural, retail, corporate, commercial and environmental education facilities. The following portfolio comprises a small sampling of projects intended to illuminate the key to a diverse body of work that does not adhere to a particular stylistic predilection: that just as no two clients or sites are alike, no two design responses are alike. ![]() My process seeks this balance in the design of buildings, spaces and places that are careful extensions of the native landscape, client-and-site responsive and well-crafted with high quality, sustainable methods and materials. Thoughtful modern design, therefore, entails a generalist’s touch guided by an abiding sense that deep affiliations with Nature are essential to human health and emotional well-being and that stewardship is a given.
